Workplace & Community Impact

Through on-vessel programming, workshops, digital learning modules, and public demonstrations, The Center for Electric Marine Innovation Inc. is building the educational foundation necessary for:

  • Safer electric vessel conversions
  • Skilled technical labor development
  • Informed marina infrastructure upgrades
  • Confident first responder preparedness
  • Public trust in electric marine systems

Education is not an accessory to our mission — it is central to it.

Accelerating the responsible transition to zero-emission marine propulsion

The Center for Electric Marine Innovation Inc. was founded to accelerate the responsible transition to electric propulsion in the marine industry through education, real-world demonstration, and independent validation. By focusing on the electrification of legacy vessels, the Center advances a practical and inclusive pathway to decarbonization. The existing used-boat fleet represents the largest opportunity for meaningful emissions reduction in the marine sector. Repurposing and electrifying these vessels not only reduces environmental impact and prevents material waste, but also expands access to clean marine technology beyond the new-build luxury market. This approach supports a circular economy model, strengthens workforce development opportunities, and makes sustainable boating attainable for educators, families, and small operators.

Christopher C. Fox, Founder and Executive Director, established the Center to bridge the gap between emerging electric propulsion technologies and real-world marine application. His commitment to renewable energy began in 2018 with the installation of residential solar generation and battery storage systems, followed by hands-on experience with electric vehicle technologies and distributed energy management. Recognizing that the marine industry faced similar electrification challenges, he launched the Center to provide a neutral, data-driven platform for demonstration and public education.

Through the Center’s flagship initiative, This Old Hull – Going Electric, Chris leads the restoration and electrification of legacy vessels as living laboratories for performance testing, emissions measurement, technician training, and public outreach. The program emphasizes manufacturer independence, measurable outcomes, and transparent reporting to ensure safe, scalable adoption of electric marine propulsion.

Chris currently serves in a volunteer capacity as the organization builds foundational partnerships and secures grant funding to expand its educational and environmental impact.
