Battery Technology Evaluation
Marine electrification is directly influenced by advances in battery chemistry, energy density, safety architecture, and lifecycle durability.
CEMI evaluates current-generation marine battery systems, including:
- All battery technologies
- Integrated Battery Management Systems (BMS)
- Thermal regulation strategies
- Energy density per weight and per volume
- Charge rate capability and shore power compatibility
••Lifecycle cost and degradation patterns
In addition to commercially available lithium-ion systems, the Center closely monitors the development of next-generation chemistries, including solid-state batteries.
Solid-state battery technology has the potential to offer:
- Increased energy density
- Improved thermal stability
- Reduced fire risk due to solid electrolytes
- Longer service life
While solid-state systems are still emerging in large-scale marine applications, CEMI remains committed to evaluating their viability as the technology matures. Our objective is not early adoption for novelty, but responsible integration once performance, safety, and marine durability standards are validated.
By comparing current battery platforms with cutting-edge developments, the Center aims to provide realistic, data-driven guidance for vessel electrification.
